The Buster Keaton Collection Volume 5: Three Ages and Our Hospitality

(1923) "Three Ages" was Keaton’s first foray into feature film production after a successful string of shorts. This hilariously inventive satire of D.W. Griffith’s "Intolerance" follows the age-old story of misadventures on the road to finding love, retold in three separate eras, a structure that cleverly allowed Keaton to recut the film into three separate shorts if it failed as a feature. For this restoration, five elements were compared, with a second-generation duplicate negative being used for the majority. "Our Hospitality" is perhaps Keaton’s most nuanced comedy and again finds Buster recreating a bygone era. In it, he plays a 19th-century New Yorker who returns to the antebellum South to claim his inheritance, but finds himself also inheriting a longstanding multi-generational feud between his family and that of the woman he loves (played by Buster’s real-life spouse, Natalie Talmadge). For this restoration, a total of 17 film elements were compared, with a first-generation nitrate positive held at the Library of Congress being the main element used. Formats: Blu-ray. The Sinister Dr. Orolff

With his 1962 film "The Awful Dr Orloff," director Jess Franco laid the ground work for the Spanish horror boom that was to follow later in that decade. The film’s mixture of sex, surgery and gothic horror was a game changer in many ways. Twenty years on, he revisited his classic to create this chilling and macabre follow up; the film features the original doctor, played by Howard Vernon, with Antonio Mayans as his son, Alfred. The film is set amongst the bright neon lights and gaudy tourist attractions of Alicante, on Spain’s Costa Blanca. Alfred Orloff cruises the bustling night-time streets, seeking out women, whom he takes back to his empty apartment. There he drugs them and has his blind brother, Andros, carry them off to a secret laboratory where Orloff has created a bizarre mind transference machine, hoping to transplant the consciousness of the captive women into the body of his comatose mother. Orloff’s father becomes aware that his son is starting to enjoy these murderous night games and decides that he must stop the deadly experiments that are being conducted in his name. Scream Queen

(2002) Considered a "lost" Linnea Quigley movie, "Scream Queen" now enjoys its first ever wide release on home video. Horror star Malicia Tombs (Quigley, herself a Scream Queen) mysteriously dies after leaving the set of her latest, now unfinished, low budget shot-on-video shocker. Soon, an unseen masked killer is chopping and hacking his/her way through the cast and crew as punishment for Tomb's death - leaving a bloody trail of revenge. This super obscurity was shot in 1998 by indie horror stalwart Brad Sykes, and finally finished in 2002. The film is not only a solid 1990s Shot-on-Video slasher that borrows from the Italian Giallo sub-genre, but also takes swift jabs at the US independent horror movie scene of the time.
