photo for Häxan BLU-RAY DEBUT Häxan BLU-RAY DEBUT (1922) Grave robbing, torture, possessed nuns, and a satanic Sabbath: Benjamin Christensen's legendary silent film uses a series of dramatic vignettes to explore the scientific hypothesis that the witches of the Middle Ages suffered the same hysteria as turn-of-the-century psychiatric patients. Far from a dry dissertation on the topic, the film itself is a witches' brew of the scary, the gross, and the darkly humorous. Christensen's mix-and-match approach to genre anticipates gothic horror, documentary re-creation, and the essay film, making for an experience unlike anything else in the history of cinema. Formats: Blu-ray Disc with new 2K digital restoration. Extras: Music from the original Danish premiere, arranged by film-music specialist Gillian Anderson and performed by the Czech Film Orchestra in 2001, presented in 5.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio; audio commentary from 2001 featuring film scholar Casper Tybjerg; "Witchcraft Through the Ages" (1968), the 76-minute version of "Häxan," narrated by author William S. Burroughs, with a soundtrack featuring violinist Jean-Luc Ponty; director Benjamin Christensen's introduction to the 1941 rerelease; short selection of outtakes; "Bibliothèque Diabolique": a photographic exploration of Christensen's historical sources; essays by critic Chris Fujiwara and scholar Chloé Germaine Buckley, as well as remarks on the score by Anderson. photo for Killer Nun Killer Nun (1979 -- Italy) Aging blonde-bombshell Anita Ekberg gives a full-bodied performance as a sex-crazed sister with some seriously bad habits in this lurid cult classic. One of the most notorious "nunsploitation" films, "Killer Nun" tells the sordid story of Sister Gertrude, a disturbed woman of the cloth who degenerates into a perverse mire of drug taking, sexual perversion, sadistic torture and murder. Joe Dallesandro ("Flesh for Frankenstein"), Alida Valli ("Suspiria") and the ample Paola Morra ("Behind Convent Walls") offer spirited performances and able support to Ekberg, in this shocking tale based on real events. Boasting an incongruously classy score by legendary composer Alessandro Alessandroni and stylishly rendered scenes of sex and murder, "Killer Nun" takes the viewer on hair-raising journey from the heights of religious ecstasy to the depths of devilish degeneracy. Giulio Berruti's sleazy classic is presented in a stunning new 2K restoration. Formats: Blu-ray. Extras: New audio commentary by Italian genre film connoisseurs Adrian J. Smith and David Flint; "Beyond Convent Walls," a new video essay on nunsploitation and "Killer Nun" by critic Kat Ellinger; "Starry Eyes," a new interview with director Giulio Berruti; "Cut and Noise," a new interview with editor Mario Giacco; "Our Mother of Hell," a new interview with actress Ileana Fraia; original Italian and international theatrical trailers; image gallery; reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Daryl Joyce. The documentary starts on the Greek island of Hydra in 1960, where Cohen, then a struggling and unknown fiction writer, and Ihlen, a single mother with a young son, became part of a community of expat artists, writers, and musicians.
