photo for Massacre at Central High

Massacre at Central High

(1976) Andrew Stevens, Derrel Maury, Kimberly Beck, Rainbeaux Smith, Robert Carradine. The startling U.S. debut of Dutch writer-director Rene Daalder, originally released in 1976, is a thriller about a high school transfer student who resorts to murder after being pushed too far by a trio of bullies. When it appears he has freed his fellow classmates from the rule of violent oppressors, the newfound power becomes too much and soon the bullied become the bullies. For years, "Massacre at Central High" more or less slipped under the radar. With the exception of Robert Carradine, the cast consisted of actors you might recognize but not know by name. That, coupled with a title that suggests it might be your run-of-the-mill slasher rather than a smart commentary on the power and influence of violence, has resulted in an under-appreciated gem. Not everyone overlooked the film, however. In an early 1980s episode of Sneak Previews, famed critic Roger Ebert listed "Massacre at Central High" as one of his guilty pleasures, praising it as "an intelligent and uncompromising allegory about the psychology of violence." Ebert further elaborated on how the "well-crafted" film does an excellent job showcasing how the "student body is a breeding ground for fascism." Nearly 50 years later, those themes present in the film are as relevant as ever. High-definition 1080p remaster scanned, transferred and supervised by Daalder. Formats: Blu-ray. Extras: New documentary "Hell in the Hallways: The Making of Massacre at Central High," Massacre at Central High stars Andrew Stevens, Derrel Maury, Kimberly Beck, Rainbeaux Smith, and Robert Carradine.(Synapse Films).

Exotica

(1994) One of the defining independent films of the 1990s, Atom Egoyan's mesmerizing international breakthrough takes the conventions of the psychological thriller into bold new territory -- unsettling, dreamlike, and empathetic. At the neon-drenched Toronto strip club of the film's title, a coterie of lost and damaged souls -- including a man haunted by grief (Bruce Greenwood), a young woman with whom he shares an enigmatic bond (Mia Kirshner), an obsessive emcee (Elias Koteas), and a smuggler of rare bird eggs (Don McKellar) -- search for redemption as they work through the traumas of their mysteriously interconnected histories in an obsessive cycle of sex, pain, jealousy, and catharsis. Masterfully weaving together past and present, Egoyan constructs a spellbinding narrative puzzle, the full emotional impact of which doesn't hit until the last piece is in place. Formats: DVD, Blu-ray, with new, restored 4K digital transfer, supervised and approved by director Atom Egoyan and director of photography Paul Sarossy, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio on the Blu-ray. Le corbeau Blu-ray Debut

(1943) A mysterious writer of poison-pen letters, known only as Le Corbeau (the Raven), plagues a provincial French town, exposing the collective suspicion and rancor seething beneath the community’s calm surface. Made during the Nazi occupation of France, this film by Henri-Georges Clouzot was attacked by the right-wing Vichy regime, the left-wing Resistance press, and the Catholic Church, and was banned after the country’s liberation. But some -- including Jean Cocteau and Jean-Paul Sartre -- recognized the powerful subtext to Clouzot’s anti-informant, anti-Gestapo fable and worked to rehabilitate his directorial reputation after the war. "Le Corbeau" brilliantly captures the spirit of paranoid pettiness and self-loathing that turns an occupied French town into a 20th-century Salem. Formats:Blu-ray, with new 4K restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack. (The Criterion Collection). Read more here

A Fugitive From the Past

(1965 -- Japan) Considered the magnum opus of the five decades-long career of Tomu Uchida, this epic crime drama was voted third in the prestigious Kinema Junpo magazine's 1999 poll of the Top Japanese Films of the 20th Century. In 1947, a freak typhoon sends a passenger ferry running between Hokkaido and mainland Japan plunging to the ocean depths, with hundreds of lives lost. During the chaos, three men are witnessed fleeing a burning pawnshop in the Hokkaido port town of Iwanai. The police suspect theft and arson, and when Detective Yumisaka (Junzaburo Ban) discovers the burned remains of a boat and the corpses of two men, he sets about tracking the shadowy third figure. Meanwhile, the mysterious Takichi Inukai (Rentaro Mikuni) takes shelter with a prostitute, Yae (Sachiko Hidari), a brief encounter that will come to define both of their lives. A decade later, long after the trail has gone cold, Yumisaka is called back by his successor Detective Ajimura (Ken Takakura) as two new dead bodies are found. Making its home video debut outside of Japan, this adaptation of Tsutomu Minakami's 1700-page novel is a landmark in master director Uchida's oeuvre. Its gritty monochrome photography has the immediacy of newsreel as Uchida uses the landscapes of postwar Japan to explore the massive social upheaval and unspoken legacies of the war, and create an unsettling karmic allegory of a man's struggle to escape his past sins. Fearful memories of this timeless 1953 bone-chiller still haunt the dreams of fans who have never forgotten the story of David MacLean, a young boy (Hunt) who witnesses an alien invasion.
