The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter

(1984 -- Hong Kong) After one of its lead actors (cherub-faced action icon Alexander Fu Sheng) unexpectedly died midway through production, fight-choreographer-turned-master-director Lau Kar-leung retooled his latest film, "The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter," as the ultimate action spectacular in tribute to his young star. Loosely based upon the legendary Yang dynasty chronicled in Chinese folklore, the film starts as a family patriarch and all but two of his sons are brutally wiped out in a bloody battle with a rival family. One surviving son (Fu Sheng) returns to his mother and two sisters, driven mad with grief; the other (Gordon Liu) escapes and joins a nearby monastery while in hiding. Once he learns his sister (Kara Hui) has been captured by their enemies, however, the warrior-turned-monk realizes he must renounce his peaceful ideals in order to mount a rescue mission and avenge his family. One of Shaw Brothers' final all-star martial arts epics before they ceased filmmaking altogether, "The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter" is often regarded as Lau's masterpiece, as elegiac and suffused with anguish as it is thrillingly violent (not least in its bone-crunching, teeth-smashing climax). Extras: Brand new commentary by Jonathan Clements, author of "A Brief History of China"; newly filmed appreciation by film critic and historian Tony Rayns; interviews with stars Gordon Liu, Lily Li and Yeung Ching-ching, filmed by Frédéric Ambroisine in 2004; "A Tribute to Fu Sheng," a short film commemorating the late actor that played before early screenings of "The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter," presented via a German-dubbed telecine (the best available copy) with English subtitles; alternate opening credits, as "The Invincible Pole Fighters"; theatrical trailer; image gallery; reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Marc Aspinall; FIRST PRESSING ONLY: Illustrated collectors' booklet featuring new writing on the film by Terrence J. Brady. (Arrow Video/MVD Entertainment). Read more here.

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (UHD)

(1994) Kenneth Branagh leads an all-star cast including Robert De Niro, Helena Bonham Carter, Tom Hulce, Ian Holm, John Cleese and Aidan Quinn in his definitive cinematic version of Mary Shelley's classic tale of gothic terror. At the turn of the 19th century, visionary scientist Victor Frankenstein (Kenneth Branagh) embarks on an obsessive quest to conquer the mysteries of human mortality. But his hubristic bid to create life out of death goes photo for Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (UHD)hideously wrong, and succeeds only in begetting a deformed monster (Robert De Niro). Horrified by what he has wrought, the scientist attempts to destroy his creation, but fails. Rejected by his creator and shunned by the world of man, the tormented creature swears vengeance against Frankenstein and his family. As the monster begins to enact his murderous revenge, Victor must face a terrible reckoning with the tragic consequences of attempting to play God. Mary Shelley's seminal novel is one of the most adapted books of all time, and this retelling faithfully goes back to the original source, lushly transforming the story's twin themes of love and death into a darkly operatic gothic romance. Unlike many versions of Shelley's novel, Branagh's adaptation understands that Frankenstein's misbegotten creation is as pitiable as he is monstrous, and never loses sight of the human tragedy lying at the core of its horrific tale. Filled with sweeping, atmospheric visuals and powerfully emotional performances from an award-winning ensemble of acting talent, "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" stands as a landmark interpretation of this enduring masterpiece. Walker BLU-RAY DEBUT

(1987) A hallucinatory biopic that breaks all cinematic conventions, "Walker," from British director Alex Cox, tells the story of 19th-century American adventurer William Walker (Ed Harris), who abandoned a series of careers in law, politics, journalism, and medicine to become a soldier of fortune and, for many months, the dictator of Nicaragua. Made with mad abandon and political acuity -- and the support of the Sandinista army and government during the contra war -- the film uses this true tale as a satirical attack on American ultrapatriotism and a freewheeling condemnation of “manifest destiny.” Featuring a powerful score by Joe Strummer and a performance of intense, repressed rage by Harris, "Walker" remains one of Cox’s most daring works. The Girl Can’t Help It BLU-RAY DEBUT

The only question is: Can she actually sing? A CinemaScope feast of eye-popping midcentury design, "The Girl Can’t Help It" bops along to a parade of performances by rock-and-roll trailblazers, including Little Richard, Fats Domino, Julie London, Eddie Cochran, the Platters, and Gene Vincent, who light up the screen with the uniquely American sound that was about to conquer the world. Dementia

(1953) An entirely unique and utterly bizarre film, John J. Parker’s "Dementia" is a 1950s style foray into the mind of psycho-sexual madness. Set entirely in a nocturnal twilight zone that blends dream imagery with the cinematic stylings of film noir, the film follows the tormented existence of a young woman haunted by the horrors of her youth, which transformed her into a stiletto-wielding, man-hating beatnik. Accompanied by George Antheil’s sci-fi score, the camera follows a “Gamin” (Adrienne Barrett) on a surreal sleepwalk through B-movie hell, populated by prostitutes, pimps, and would-be molesters – all photographed by William Thompson ("Plan 9 From Outer Space"). Two years after its original release, a narration track of foreboding psychobabble (diabolically spoken by Ed McMahon) was added and the title was changed to the more sensational "Daughter of Horror." This edition presents the original cut of "Dementia", digitally remastered from the 35MM negative, as well as the complete "Daughter of Horror" (from a 35MM print), and the original theatrical trailer. Formats: Blu-ray. (Cohen Film Collection).

For All Mankind 4K Ultra HD Debut

(1989) In July 1969, the space race ended when Apollo 11 fulfilled President John F. Kennedy’s challenge of “landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.” No one who witnessed the lunar landing will ever forget it. Twenty years later, Al Reinert constructed a documentary that imparts the unforgettable story of the 24 astronauts who participated in the Apollo mission to land on the moon -- told in their words and in their voices, using the images they captured. With its awe-inspiring, otherworldly footage and a haunting atmospheric soundtrack by Brian Eno, "For All Mankind" stirs us with a profound sense of compassion for the “pale blue dot” that is our home, and it is still the most radical, visually dazzling work of cinema that has been made about this earthshaking event. In the 4K UHD edition: New 4K digital restorations of the original 1.33:1 framing and the alternate 1.85:1 theatrical presentation, with 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. In the 4K UHD edition: One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special features. High-definition digital transfer, supervised and approved by producer-director Al Reinert, with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack on the Blu-ray. (The Criterion Collection). Read more here

Twisting the Knife: Four Films by Claude Chabrol

For five decades Claude Chabrol navigated the unpredictable waters of cinema, leaving in his wake 55 feature films that remain among the most quietly devastating genre movies ever made. "The Swindle" sees Chabrol at perhaps his most playful as a pair of scam artists, Isabelle Huppert and Michel Serrault, get in over their heads. But who is scamming who and who do you trust in a life built on so many lies? The murder of a 10-year-old girl sparks rumors and photo for gossip in "The Color of Lies," as suspicion falls on René (Jacques Gamblin), the dour once famous painter, now art teacher, who was the last person to see her alive. Enigmatic, perverse, seductive, Isabelle Huppert encapsulates everything that makes "Nightcap" a film John Waters calls "cinematic perfection" in this tale of suppressed family secrets. Finally, in "The Flower of Evil," incest, old money and intergenerational guilt come under the scalpel as an outwardly perfect bourgeois family begins to unravel when the wife involves herself in politics. Though influenced by Fritz Lang, Alfred Hitchcock and Jean Renoir, Chabrol's voice was entirely and assuredly his own, influencing in turn filmmakers like Bong Joon-ho, James Gray and Dominik Moll. His amused, unblinkered view of life and refusal to judge his characters makes his films timelessly relevant and accessible to all. This is Arrow Video's second collection of films by Chabrol, with a wealth of new and archival extras. Formats: Blu-ray. Extras: 80-page collector's booklet of new writing by Sean Hogan, Brad Stevens, Catherine Dousteyssier-Khoze, Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, and Pamela Hutchinson; limited edition packaging featuring newly commissioned artwork by Tony Stella; new interviews with Cécile Maistre-Chabrol, Isabelle Huppert, Jacques Dutronc; behind-the-scenes featurettes; select scene commentaries by Claude Chabrol on all four films; trailers; image galleries; much, much more.
