The Jackie Gleason Show in Color

Everything about Jackie Gleason was big: his huge talent, his outsized personality, and his expansive waist line. Even bigger was "The Jackie Gleason Show," his successful TV Variety show, taped in color from beautiful Miami Beach from 1966 to 970. "The Jackie Gleason Show" had been broadcast live and later taped in New York City since 1952, but in 1964, Gleason wanted to be based where he could play golf all year round. A Fanatic Heart: Bob Geldof On W. B. Yeats

(2017 -- UK -- TV) Musician and advocate Bob Geldof examines the life and work of one of the 20th century's greatest poets, William Butler Yeats. "A Fanatic Heart" is the extraordinary story of revolution, nation-birth, mythology and disillusion and how one poetic genius dreamed and sang an entire country into being from the ravages of poverty and famine and into the raw dawn of a modern state. With over 30 unique performances of W. B. Yeats' epic poetry by leading Irish and British cultural figures, Geldof argues why Yeats and his circle built the cultural scaffolding of a modern, pluralist Ireland but was pushed aside by the narrow-minded Catholic elite of the new Free State -- the "Banana Republic" that Geldof in turn rebelled against half a century later. Written by Geldof and biographer Roy Foster, this incisive and moving documentary features readings by celebrity contributors Sting, Noel Gallagher, Elvis Costello, Edna O'Brien, Bono, Van Morrison, Shane MacGowan, Olivia O'Leary, Liam Neeson, Stephen Fry, Dominic West, Richard E. Grant, Bill Nighy, Anne Enright, Colin Farrell, Ardal O'Hanlon and many others. Formats: DVD/CD Combo. Extras: Over two hours of additional commentaries and readings by dozens of celebrities; two songs based on Yeats' poems by: Bono "Mad as the Mist and Snow," and Elvis Costello "A Drunken Man's Praise of Sobriety"; "Yeats Remembered" soundtrack by Pete Briquette; 73 poetry readings and 23 discussion pieces. Act & Punishment -- The Pussy Riot Trials

(2015 -- Russia) This captivating documentary film tells the story of the Russian all-girl punk rock band Pussy Riot, who stood up to the Russian government’s human rights oppression and paid the price by being incarcerated in 2011. But rather than photo for silencing their voices, the incident only amplified them, turning the band into a global symbol of feminist political activism, culminating in their widely seen concert at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, where band members were attacked by a group of Cossacks hired as security guards. Russian activists Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Ekaterina Samutsevich decided to separate from the well-known activist group Voina and created their own group named Pussy Riot to express their ideas of female independence, combining activism, feminism and punk rock music. Pussy Riot quickly drew public attention after a show on the Lobnoye Mesto in the Red Square, where they accused the authorities of sexism, singing the song "Putin Turned Chicken." This performance landed them in a police station amid much mass media attention. Pussy Riot then decided to conduct a punk rock church service in the Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, sparking interest from journalists and cameramen who managed to film it. Three of the girls were arrested and threatened with seven years in prison, as a number of world stars expressed their support for the artists. They were offered liberty if they agreed to confess and repent for their "crime." Refusing to budge, the court sentenced them instead to two years in prison. Formats: DVD. (Cleopatra Entertainment).

The Bird With the Crystal Plumage Blu-ray

(1970 -- Italy) In 1970, young first-time director Dario Argento made his indelible mark on Italian cinema with "The Bird with the Crystal Plumage," a film that redefined the "giallo" genre of murder-mystery thrillers and catapulted him to international stardom. Night of the Living Dead

(1968) Shot outside Pittsburgh on a shoestring budget by a band of filmmakers determined to make their mark, "Night of the Living Dead," directed by horror master George A. Romero, is one of the great stories of independent cinema: a midnight hit turned box-office smash that became one of the most influential films of all time. A deceptively simple tale of a group of strangers trapped in a farmhouse who find photo for Night of the Living Deadthemselves fending off a horde of recently dead, flesh-eating ghouls, Romero's claustrophobic vision of a late-1960s America literally tearing itself apart rewrote the rules of the horror genre, combined gruesome gore with acute social commentary, and quietly broke ground by casting a black actor (Duane Jones) in its lead role. Stark, haunting, and more relevant than ever, "Night of the Living Dead" is back, in a new 4K restoration. Formats: DVD, Blu-ray Disc supervised by director George A. Romero, co-screenwriter John A. Russo, sound engineer Gary R. Streiner, and producer Russell W. Streiner; new restoration of the monaural soundtrack, supervised by Romero and Gary R. Streiner and Russel W. Streiner; trailer, radio spots, and TV spots; an essay by critic Stuart Klawans. (The Criterion Collection).
photo for Orchestra Rehearsal

Orchestra Rehearsal

(1978) Made in 1978 for Italian television, "Orchestra Rehearsal" is possibly Fellini's most satirical and overtly political film. An allegorical pseudo-documentary, the film depicts an Italian television crew's visit to a dilapidated auditorium (a converted 13th-century church) to meet an orchestra assembling to rehearse under the instruction of a tyrannical conductor. The TV crew interviews the various musicians, who each speak lovingly about their chosen instruments. However, as petty squabbles break out amid the different factions of the ensemble, and the conductor berates his musicians, the meeting descends into anarchy and vandalism. A destructive crescendo ensues before the musicians regroup and play together once more in perfect harmony. Abounding with its director's trademark rich imagery and expressive style, "Orchestra Rehearsal" marks the last collaboration between Fellini and the legendary composer Nino Rota (due to the latter's death in 1979) who provides one of his most beautiful themes in the film's conclusion. Formats: Blu-ray with new 2K restoration from original film elements, produced by Arrow Films exclusively for this release, with original 1.0 mono sound. Extras: Richard Dyer on Nino Rota and "Orchestra Rehearsal": the film scholar talks about the great composer and his last collaboration with Fellini; "Orchestrating Discord," a visual essay on the film by Fellini biographer John Baxter; gallery featuring rare poster and press material on the film from the Felliniana collection of Don Young; reversible sleeve featuring two original artwork options; First Pressing Only: Illustrated collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the film by Adrian Martin. While they recount their stories, the film drifts between the bloody end of World War II and the gilded, halcyon days when their destinies first crossed. Victim, bystander, or monster? Konchalovsky collapses these identities, offering a new perspective on the Holocaust. Shot in stunning black and white, the film depicts the morally complex choices that one must make during dark times in search of PARADISE. Formats: DVD. (Film Movement).

An Actor's Revenge

(1963 -- Japan) A uniquely prolific and chameleonic figure of world cinema, Kon Ichikawa delivered a burst of stylistic bravado with this intricate tale of betrayal and retribution. Set in the cloistered world of 19th-century kabuki theater, the film charts a female impersonator's attempts to avenge the deaths of his parents, who were driven to insanity and suicide by a trio of corrupt men. Ichikawa takes the conventions of melodrama and turns them on their head, bringing the hero's fractured psyche to life in boldly experimental widescreen compositions infused with kaleidoscopic color, pop-art influences, and meticulous choreography. Anchored by a magnificently androgynous performance by Kazuo Hasegawa, reprising a role he had played on-screen three decades earlier, "An Actor's Revenge" is an eye-popping examination of how the illusions of art intersect with life. Formats: DVD, Blu-ray Disc with new 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray. Extras: Rare 1999 Directors Guild of Japan interview with director Kon Ichikawa, conducted by critic and filmmaker Yuki Mori; new interview with critic, filmmaker, and festival programmer Tony Rayns; an essay by critic Michael Sragow. Basket Case [Limited Edition Blu-ray]

(1982) The feature debut of director Frank Henenlotter ("Brain Damage," "Frankenhooker"), 1982's "Basket Case" is perhaps his most revered -- a riotous and blood-spattered midnight movie experience, now immortalized in a lavish new 4K restoration by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Duane Bradley is a pretty ordinary guy. His formerly conjoined twin Belial, on the other hand, is a deformed, fleshy lump whom he carries around in a wicker basket. Arriving in the Big Apple and taking up a room at the seedy Hotel Broslin, the pair set about hunting down and butchering the surgeons responsible for their separation. But tensions flare up when Duane starts spending time with a pretty blonde secretary, and Belial's homicidal tendencies reach bloody new extremes. Filmed on a shoestring budget against the backdrop of 1980s New York (where the movie would become a staple of the infamous 42nd Street grindhouse circuit), "Basket Case" has clawed its way from its humble origins to become one of the most celebrated cult movies of all time. Copyright Criminials: The Funky Drummer Edition

(2017) Documentary examines the creative and commercial value of musical sampling, including the related debates over artistic expression, copyright law, and (of course) money. From director Benjamin Franzen, this acclaimed doc, which originally aired on PBS' "Independent Lens," traces the rise of hip-hop from the urban streets of New York to its current status as a multibillion-dollar industry. For more than 30 years, innovative hip-hop performers and producers have been re-using portions of previously recorded music in new, otherwise original compositions. When lawyers and record companies got involved, what was once referred to as a "borrowed melody" became a "copyright infringement." Showcasing many of hip-hop music's founding figures like Public Enemy, De La Soul, and Digital Underground -- while also featuring emerging hip-hop artists from record labels Definitive Jux, Rhymesayers, Ninja Tune, and more, the film also provides an in-depth look at artists who have been sampled, such as Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown's drummer and the world's most sampled musician), as well as commentary by another highly sampled musician, funk legend George Clinton. Formats: Two-disc DVD. Extras: "The Art of Sampling With Cee-Lo Green" featurette; "The Funky Drummer in the Studio with Chuck D" featurette; "Eclectic Method Uncut Audio-Visual Remixes (15 Videos); "Fair Use Explained: Four Featurettes by the Center for Social Media"; extended interviews with Chuck D, De La Soul, and Clyde Stubblefield; "Music Player Featuring 15+ Songs from Copyright Criminals Soundtrack" by El-P and RJD2; "Clyde Stubblefield's Ultimate Breaks and Beats" (Hi-Res WAV files); "Copyright Criminals All Star Band Funky Drummer" remix video; "Copyright Criminals All Star Band Megamix" video. Jean-Luc Godard + Jean-Pierre Gorin: Five Films, 1968-1971

After finishing his film "Weekend" in 1967, Jean-Luc Godard shifted gears to embark on engaging more directly with the radical political movements of the era, and thus create a new kind of film, or, as he eventually put it: "new ideas distributed in a new way." This new method in part involved collaborating with the precocious young critic and journalist, Jean-Pierre Gorin. Both as a two-person unit, and as part of the loose collective known as the Groupe Dziga Vertov (named after the early 20th-century Russian filmmaker and theoretician), Godard and Gorin would realize "some political possibilities for the practice of cinema" and craft new frameworks for investigating the relationships between image and sound, spectator and subject, cinema and society. Included in this six-disc set are five films, all originally shot in 16mm celluloid, that serve as examples of Godard and Gorin's revolutionary project: "Un film comme les autres [A Film Like Any Other]," "British Sounds, aka: See You at Mao," "Vent d'est [Wind From the East]," "Lotte in Italia/Luttes en Italie [Struggles in Italy]," "Vladimir et Rosa [Vladimir and Rosa]." Formats: Blu-ray/DVD Combo. Extras: "A Conversation With JLG": Interview with Jean-Luc Godard from 2010 by Dominique Maillet and Pierre-Henri Gibert; 100-page full-color book containing English translations for the first time of writing by, and interviews with, Godard and Gorin, and more. Tom Jones

(1963) In the early 1960s, at the height of the British New Wave, a movement whose gritty realism they had helped establish, director Tony Richardson and playwright John Osborne set out for more fanciful narrative territory. Tom Jones brings a theatrical flair to Henry Fielding's canonical 18th-century novel, boisterously chronicling the misadventures of the foundling of the title (Albert Finney, in a career-defining turn), whose easy charm seems to lead him astray at every turn from his beloved, the wellborn Sophie Western (Susannah York).
