Elevator to the Gallows

Henri-Georges Clouzot's Inferno

The Jackie Gleason Show in Color

Everything about Jackie Gleason was big: his huge talent, his outsized personality, and his expansive waist line. Even bigger was "The Jackie Gleason Show," his successful TV Variety show, taped in color from beautiful Miami Beach from 1966 to 970. "The Jackie Gleason Show" had been broadcast live and later taped in New York City since 1952, but in 1964, Gleason wanted to be based where he could play golf all year round. Hank Meyer, a longtime South Florida publicist, knew just the spot and convinced Jackie 1to bring his show to Miami Beach, the sun and fun capital of the world. However, back in the '60s, it was a novel undertaking to broadcast from Miami Beach, and more than a hundred families relocated to stay with the show. Plus, there was barely any production infrastructure in South Florida, which all had to be created by Jackie and his team. However, it all paid off and the revamped show was a huge success. Gleason was everyone's working-class hero, and his smash-hit show delivered an hour of non-stop entertainment every single week. Enthralled home audiences were treated to entertainment of the highest order -- singing, dancing, hilarious comedy and Jackie at his very best as Ralph Kramden and on stage with all his famous friends -- Milton Berle, Red Buttons, George Carlin, Nipsey Russell, Phil Silvers and more -- and all in brilliant color. This single disc release features four never-before-released, remastered episodes of the show -- including three unreleased Honeymooners sketches -- all unseen for more than 50 years since the master tapes had resided in a vault in South Florida ... until now. Act & Punishment -- The Pussy Riot Trials

(2015 -- Russia) This captivating documentary film tells the story of the Russian all-girl punk rock band Pussy Riot, who stood up to the Russian government’s human rights oppression and paid the price by being incarcerated in 2011. But rather than silencing their voices, the incident only amplified them, turning the band into a global symbol of feminist political activism, culminating in their widely seen concert at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, where band members were attacked by a group of Cossacks hired as security guards. Russian activists Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Ekaterina Samutsevich decided to separate from the well-known activist group Voina and created their own group named Pussy Riot to express their ideas of female independence, combining activism, feminism and punk rock music. Pussy Riot quickly drew public attention after a show on the Lobnoye Mesto in the Red Square, where they accused the authorities of sexism, singing the song "Putin Turned Chicken." This performance landed them in a police station amid much mass media attention. Pussy Riot then decided to conduct a punk rock church service in the Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, sparking interest from journalists and cameramen who managed to film it. Three of the girls were arrested and threatened with seven years in prison, as a number of world stars expressed their support for the artists. They were offered liberty if they agreed to confess and repent for their "crime." Refusing to budge, the court sentenced them instead to two years in prison. Formats: DVD. (Cleopatra Entertainment).

(2015 -- Germany) Documents a Holocaust and Lodz Ghetto survivor's return to today's Lodz (Poland). Until now, Natan Grossmann had repressed his desire to learn about the fate of his brother he lost contact with in 1942. 70 years later, Grossmann starts a search for his missing sibling. His search crosses paths with Jens-Jurgen Ventzki, son of the former Nazi Head Mayor of Lodz. Ventzki is pursuing his family's dark secret. In tracing their family histories, they inevitably confront each other. The title refers to the streetcar line that would pass through the ghetto, making the suffering of the imprisoned Jewish people plainly viable to the Polish passengers. Formats: DVD. Night of the Living Dead

(1968) Shot outside Pittsburgh on a shoestring budget by a band of filmmakers determined to make their mark, "Night of the Living Dead," directed by horror master George A. Romero, is one of the great stories of independent cinema: a midnight hit turned box-office smash that became one of the most influential films of all time. A deceptively simple tale of a group of strangers trapped in a farmhouse who find themselves fending off a horde of recently dead, flesh-eating ghouls, Romero's claustrophobic vision of a late-1960s America literally tearing itself apart rewrote the rules of the horror genre, combined gruesome gore with acute social commentary, and quietly broke ground by casting a black actor (Duane Jones) in its lead role. Orchestra Rehearsal

(1978) Made in 1978 for Italian television, "Orchestra Rehearsal" is possibly Fellini's most satirical and overtly political film. An allegorical pseudo-documentary, the film depicts an Italian television crew's visit to a dilapidated auditorium (a converted 13th-century church) to meet an orchestra assembling to rehearse under the instruction of a tyrannical conductor. The TV crew interviews the various musicians, who each speak lovingly about their chosen instruments. However, as petty squabbles break out amid the different factions of the ensemble, and the conductor berates his musicians, the meeting descends into anarchy and vandalism. A destructive crescendo ensues before the musicians regroup and play together once more in perfect harmony. Abounding with its director's trademark rich imagery and expressive style, "Orchestra Rehearsal" marks the last collaboration between Fellini and the legendary composer Nino Rota (due to the latter's death in 1979) who provides one of his most beautiful themes in the film's conclusion. Seijun Suzuki: The Early Years Vol. 1

Youth on the loose and rebels without causes in the unruly Seishun Eiga Youth movies of Japanese iconoclast Seijun Suzuki. Making their home-video debuts outside Japan, this diverse selection of Nikkatsu youth movies (Seishun Eiga) charts the evolving style of the B-movie maverick best known for the cult classics "Tokyo Drifter" (1966) and "Branded to Kill" (1967). "The Boy Who Came Back" (1958) marks the first appearances of "Nikkatsu Diamond Guys" and regular Suzuki collaborators Akira Kobayashi and Jo Shishido, with Kobayashi cast as the hot-headed hoodlum fresh out of reform school who struggles to make a clean break with his tearaway past. The "Wind-of-Youth Group Crosses the Mountain Pass" (1961) is a carnivalesque tale of a young student who hooks up with a down-at-heels travelling circus troupe. The Silence of the Lambs

(1982) The feature debut of director Frank Henenlotter ("Brain Damage," "Frankenhooker"), 1982's "Basket Case" is perhaps his most revered -- a riotous and blood-spattered midnight movie experience, now immortalized in a lavish new 4K restoration by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Duane Bradley is a pretty ordinary guy. His formerly conjoined twin Belial, on the other hand, is a deformed, fleshy lump whom he carries around in a wicker basket. Arriving in the Big Apple and taking up a room at the seedy Hotel Broslin, the pair set about hunting down and butchering the surgeons responsible for their separation. But tensions flare up when Duane starts spending time with a pretty blonde secretary, and Belial's homicidal tendencies reach bloody new extremes. Copyright Criminials: The Funky Drummer Edition

(2017) Documentary examines the creative and commercial value of musical sampling, including the related debates over artistic expression, copyright law, and (of course) money. From director Benjamin Franzen, this acclaimed doc, which originally aired on PBS' "Independent Lens," traces the rise of hip-hop from the urban streets of New York to its current status as a multibillion-dollar industry. Jean-Luc Godard + Jean-Pierre Gorin: Five Films, 1968-1971

After finishing his film "Weekend" in 1967, Jean-Luc Godard shifted gears to embark on engaging more directly with the radical political movements of the era, and thus create a new kind of film, or, as he eventually put it: "new ideas distributed in a new way." This new method in part involved collaborating with the precocious young critic and journalist, Jean-Pierre Gorin. Both as a two-person unit, and as part of the loose collective known as the Groupe Dziga Vertov (named after the early 20th-century Russian filmmaker and theoretician), Godard and Gorin would realize "some political possibilities for the practice of cinema" and craft new frameworks for investigating the relationships between image and sound, spectator and subject, cinema and society. Polluting Paradise

Rebecka Martinsson

(2017) Two-disc set with eight episodes. Ida Engvoll ("The Bridge") stars as Rebecka Martinsson, an unconventional lawyer in Stockholm with a successful career and a handsome boyfriend. When a childhood friend suddenly dies, Rebecka returns to her remote hometown above the Arctic Circle for the funeral. Although the death had been ruled an accident, Rebecka finds evidence of murder and contacts her friend in the police force, Anna Maria Mella (Eva Melander). Together they hunt for a killer, but what they uncover might shake Rebecka to her core. With more cases to solve, and Rebecka proving herself an asset to Mella’s police team, Rebecka must decide whether to go back to her big-city life in Stockholm or stay in Kiruna and confront her past. Scalpel

(1977) US television staple Robert Lansing stars as a deranged surgeon in this twisty-turny psychological thriller from "Blood Rage" director John Grissmer. Lansing plays Dr. Phillip Reynolds, a man whose daughter Heather (Judith Chapman) had run away from home a year prior following the suspicious death of her boyfriend. When he happens across a young woman one night, her face beaten beyond recognition, the unhinged Reynolds sees this as an opportunity to put his trusty scalpel to use -- hatching a plan to "reconstruct" her face in the image of his missing daughter, and so claim her sizeable inheritance. Photographed by celebrated cinematographer Edward Lachman, who would go on to serve as DP on the likes of "Erin Brockovich" and "The Virgin Suicides," "Scalpel" is an exemplary slice of Southern-fried gothic, finally rescued from VHS obscurity in this revelatory new Blu-ray edition from Arrow Video. The Sect (aka The Devil's Daughter

(1991 -- Italy) Kelly Lee Curtis, Herbert Lom, Maria Angela Giordano, Michel Adatte, Carla Cassola, Angelika Maria Boeck, Tomas Arana. An American schoolteacher in Germany is terrorized by a murderous Satanic cult that is plotting to plunge the world into darkness. Miriam has been relocated to what appears to be a pleasant town in Germany. One afternoon, she accidentally hits an elderly pedestrian, Moebius with her car, prompting her to take him back to her house to recuperate. What Miriam doesn’t know is that their meeting was no accident and that Moebius is the elder of a dangerous Satanic sect. A mother personally challenges the local authorities to solve her daughter's murder when they fail to catch the culprit. Tom Jones

(1963) In the early 1960s, at the height of the British New Wave, a movement whose gritty realism they had helped establish, director Tony Richardson and playwright John Osborne set out for more fanciful narrative territory. Tom Jones brings a theatrical flair to Henry Fielding's canonical 18th-century novel, boisterously chronicling the misadventures of the foundling of the title (Albert Finney, in a career-defining turn), whose easy charm seems to lead him astray at every turn from his beloved, the wellborn Sophie Western (Susannah York). This spirited picaresque, evocatively shot in England's rambling countryside and featuring an extraordinary ensemble cast, went on to become a worldwide sensation, winning the Oscar for best picture on the way to securing its status as a classic of irreverent wit and playful cinematic expression.
