Local baker and Flaubert expert Martin Joubert (Luchini) becomes entranced with Gemma — and it doesn't take long before he's drawing parallels between the literary and real-life women. Gemma catches the eye of a handsome local playboy (Schneider), and when her magnetic ex suddenly reappears, she seems to be fulfilling Joubert's worst fears that her destiny is linked to that of Flaubert's doomed heroine. When the ship's crew dredges up a recently thawed piece of old Soviet space wreckage, things get downright deadly. Now the crew is exposed to aggressively mutating organisms. And after being locked in ice for 3 decades, the creatures aren't about to give up the warmth of human companionship. photo for Salt of the Earth Salt of the Earth BLU-RAY DEBUT (1954) Juan Chacon, Rosaura Revueltas, Will Geer. This controversial film centers on a long, difficult workers' strike against a mining company in New Mexico, based on real-life events. Ramon Quintero fights for equity of wages as well as health and safety issues ... but at home he mistreats his wife, Esperanza. When the men are forced to end their picketing, Esperanza joins up with the other wives of the workers, who demand to play a role in the strike -- against their husband's wishes. Written, directed and produced by members of the original blacklisted "Hollywood Ten": director Herbert J. Biberman, screenwriter Michael Wilson, producer Paul Jarrico and composer Sol Kaplan. "Salt of the Earth" was the only film ever blacklisted in American film history; it was not allowed to be shown during the Communist scares of the 1950s and was first shown in American theaters in 1965. The production was fraught with outside interference due to the "communist" nature of the film: The entire cast and crew were met by a citizens' committee in Central, New Mexico, where they had planned to film, and were ordered to leave town. The following day they moved the production to Silver City, NM, and were warned to "get out of town ... or go out in black boxes." Because the producers feared both sabotage and destruction of the film, the exposed footage had to be developed in secret, and at night, by a sympathetic lab technician, with the film delivered in unmarked canisters. Restored and digitally remastered. (The Film Detective).

photo for All American High Revisted All American High Revisted (2014) In 1984, young filmmaker Keva Rosenfeld set out to make a film about the experience of being in high school. He spent a year following the senior class at a typical California school and edited the footage into "All American High." Told through the eyes of a visiting foreign exchange student, the film presented an uncensored view of teens in an era of big hair and parachute pants. A "real-life Fast Times at Ridgemont High," said People magazine. "Keva Rosenfeld does a spectacular job of candidly capturing the life of typical suburban teens. It is true. It is hilarious. It's a little frightening." After showings on the film festival circuit, the film was locked away in a storage vault and remained unseen until Rosenfeld came upon it three decades later. In that vault, Rosenfeld also uncovered a review that said the film captured "the values and attitudes of middle-class teenagers who will lead America into the 21st century." Wondering if this prediction came true, the director set out to locate those 17-year-old students he'd met 30 years earlier. After many phone conversations and much planning, Rosenfeld began to film the very same people he profiled long ago. By bringing this story full circle, then and now -- a generation later, "All American High Revisited" was born.Formats: DVD, VOD, Digital. (Virgil Films).
American Experience: Walt Disney (2015) In 1966, the year Walt Disney died, 240 million people saw a Disney movie, 100 million tuned in to a Disney television program, 80 million bought Disney merchandise, and close to 7 million visited Disneyland. Few creative figures before or since have held such a long-lasting place in American life and popular culture. This documentary offers an unprecedented look at the life and legacy of one of America's most enduring and influential storytellers. From photo for American Experience: Walt Disney"Steamboat Willie" to "Pinocchio" to "Mary Poppins," Disney's movies grew out of his own life experiences. He told stories of outsiders struggling for acceptance and belonging, while questioning the conventions of class and authority. As Disney rose to prominence and gained financial security, his work became increasingly celebratory of the American way of life that made his unlikely success possible. Yet despite the success he achieved, he was driven and restless, a demanding perfectionist on whom decades of relentless work and chain-smoking would take their toll. He wanted his films to make people feel deeply, yet often buried his own emotions. Aspiring to create great artistic films, he felt he wasn't taken seriously by the movie industry, and was stung when critics panned his productions. Never satisfied with his previous efforts, he always pushed forward to a "new adventure," but his attention to detail and quest for innovation frequently meant delays and cost overruns. When his employees organized and went on strike, Disney felt betrayed, not able to understand how people who worked for him could be unhappy; years later he called them "communists" before the House Un-American Activities Committee. A polarizing figure -- though true believers vastly outnumber his critics -- Disney's achievements are indisputable. He created one of the most beloved cartoon characters in history, Mickey Mouse; conceived the first ever feature-length animated film, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs"; pioneered the integration of media and marketing with thousands of branded products; and conceived Disneyland, the world's first theme park and a three-dimensional realization of his own utopian universe. Premieres Monday and Tuesday, September 14-15, 2015 on PBS. Formats: DVD. (PBS Distribution).

photo for The Beast The Beast (1975 -- France) Walerian Borowczyk's most notorious and controversial film wildly re-works the classic Beauty and the Beast story into a very adult fairy tale, a parody of pornographic tropes and an assault on notions of "good taste." Bestial dreams interrupt the venal plans of a French aristocrat attempting to save a crumbling mansion by marrying off his deformed son, Mathurin, to a horny American heiress, Lucy. Yet Mathurin seems more interested in his horses than in his bride-to-be, and when Lucy finds out about the story of his 18th-century ancestor Romilda copulating with the titular beast, it sparks to life one of the most outrageous dream sequences in cinema history. A huge hit in France that was extensively censored and banned elsewhere, "The Beast" broke new ground in sexual explicitness and remains a truly startling experience even today. photo for Immoral Tales Immoral Tales (1974 -- France) Walerian Borowczyk's first explicitly erotic feature, "Immoral Tales" presents a veritable cavalcade of depravity: cosmic fellatio, transcendental masturbation, blood-drenched lesbianism and papal incest. It tells four stories, each delving back further in time, as if to suggest that the same issues recur constantly throughout human civilization, whether involving notorious historical figures like Lucrezia Borgia and Erzsebet Bathory, or present-day teenagers. Capitalizing on the relaxation of censorship laws, "Immoral Tales" would transform Borowczyk's image from brilliant but obscure avant-garde artist to one of Europe's most confrontational filmmakers when it came to trampling on sexual taboos. The American Dreamer (1971) A candid look into the unique mind and strange life of film legend and Hollywood rebel Dennis Hopper. In 1970, actor-director Dennis Hopper, who catapulted into stardom with his 1969 counterculture road movie" Easy Rider," was in the midst of finishing his follow-up work, "The Last Movie," a film that was deeply personal -- but ultimately disastrous. That moment in photo for The American Dreamer time became the window through which noted photojournalist Lawrence Schiller and avant-garde filmmaker L.M. Kit Carson entered to preserve Hopper's life, who in their opinion had submerged himself in the myth of his character in "Easy Rider." What resulted was the quasi-documentary "The American Dreamer," a unique portrait of the pathologically rebellious Hopper, which chronicled the late artist's agonizing, alcohol- and drug-fueled post-production of "The Last Movie." The result of Schiller and Carson's work was a multi-faceted look into the unique mind and strange life of one of the 20th century’s great, cinematic voices at the peak of his artistic and commercial success. "The American Dreamer" was first released on college campuses in the 70s and then largely vanished. In the 1990s, Hopper himself brought the film back to life when he asked for it to be screened as a companion piece to "The Last Movie" at film festivals and art houses. Etiquette Pictures -- launched in July and devoted to painstakingly restoring unique and off-beat arthouse gems and rescuing them from obscurity -- in partnership with the Walker Art Center and Bond 360 Studios, brings this forgotten masterpiece to home video for the very first time in a new, director-approved, 2k restoration, painstakingly reconstructed from four 16mm prints housed in the Center’s Ruben/Bentson Moving Image Collection.
