Monty Python's The Meaning of Life Special
Edition
(1983) Directors: Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones; Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric
Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam. Two-disc 20th anniversary set.
Extras: Animated characters from the film, guide viewers to
newly created bonus features from the original Pythons including an alternate
ending, new versions of songs such as "Every Sperm is Sacred," and "The Meaning
of Life" that have been re-recorded by their authors and deleted scenes spiced
with no-holds-barred commentary on why they didn't make the cut. Plus, there's
an animated Martin Luther, whose sequence was cut from the film. Annoyed by
ending up on the cutting room floor, Martin Luther will sporadically invade the
disc in an attempt to have his sequence included. Other bonus features created
by the surviving Pythons: A madcap 50-minute featurette, "The History of the
Meaning of Life" is "guided" by animated versions of unforgettable characters
Mr. Creosote, A Fish, The Headmaster and The Man in Pink. The feature offers a
mix of contemporary footage and material shot during the production and release
of the original movie. Must-see insights from the surviving Pythons are captured
in candid interviews with Cleese, Idle, Palin along with the film's co-
writer/co-directors Jones and Gilliam. Quirky interludes in the true spirit of
Python include a digital Monty Python reunion, contemporary interviews with the
children from the "Every Sperm is Sacred" sequence and a "where are they now"
look at the film's topless runners. Plus, contemporary interviews with people
who hated the film. There's also "The John Cleese Version" is a newly created
trailer for the film, and "The School Prospectus," offering a contemporary
parody of an English Public School rife with sex education and corporal
punishment. Furthering the hilarity is "Fish," a unique option guiding viewers
into the minds of fish. On a more serious note, "The Re-Mastering of the Meaning
of Life" combines earnest and satirical takes on the restoration of the film.
The DVD-ROM edition features the original screenplay, lost scenes, song sheets
of music and lyrics from the film, Creosote cooking tips, and the Python's Good
Death Guide; $26.98. (Universal).
