  • John Wick: Chapter Two

photo for John Wick: Chapter Two "John Wick: Chapter Two" is the sequel to the 2014 surprise hit about legendary hitman John Wick (Keanu Reeves) -- nicknamed "The Boogeyman" -- who comes out of retirement to avenge the death of his dog and the theft of his prize vintage mustang by a group of Russian mobsters. In this episode (we say episode because the ending leaves the way open for a second sequel), Wick's desire to retire is foiled by Santino D'Antonio, a member of The High Table, a secret international organization of gangsters and assassins, who holds a marker given to him by Wick; the marker is a blood oath that forces him to do D'Antonio's bidding. His mission -- to assassinate D'Antonio's sister, who is scheduled to be "coronated" as the new head of The High Table. Wick then travels to Rome where he squares off against some of the world’s deadliest killers and, after dispatching dozens and dozens of assassins, he returns to New York, where he discovers that D'Antonio has placed a large bounty on his head, and he's forced to dodge and kill dozens and dozens more assassins. "Chapter 2" pretty much picks up almost immediately after the first actioner, giving little time for Wick -- or audiences -- to take a breath before the slaughter begins. And it continues throughout the movie, non-stop -- to an almost numbing degree -- which, I suppose, is the reason de arte for the whole thing. Still, it's a thrillingly choreographed, immensely fun and watchable affair. But have a mop handy for the blood. Vitals: Director: Chad Stahelski. Stars: Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Ruby Rose, Common, Laurence Fishburne, John Leguizamo, Claudia Gerini, Lance Reddick, Riccardo Scamarcio, Tobias Segal. 2017, CC, MPAA rating: R, 122 min., Action Thriller, Box office gross: $90.851 million, Lionsgate. Frantz (2016 -- France) Dir.: Francois Ozon; Paula Beer, Pierre Niney, Ernst Stötzner, Marie Gruber. Set in Germany and France in the aftermath of the First World War, the film recalls the mourning period that follows great national tragedies as seen through the eyes of the war’s “lost generation.” They are Anna (21 year-old Paula Beer in a breakthrough performance), a bereft young German woman whose fiancé, Frantz, was killed during trench warfare, and Adrien (Pierre Niney), a French war veteran who shows up mysteriously in Anna’s town, placing flowers on Frantz’s grave. Adrien's presence is met with resistance by the small community still reeling from Germany’s defeat, yet Anna gradually gets closer to the handsome and melancholy young man, as she learns of his deep friendship with Frantz. What follows is an exploration of how Anna and Adrien wrestle with their conflicting feelings -- survivor’s guilt, anger at one’s losses, the overriding desire for renewed happiness, and the longing for sexual, romantic and familial attachments. Escaping hospital, where she's recently been admitted with a horrific, disfiguring illness, Julia's sadistic sister vows to exact a particularly cruel revenge on her sibling this year -- promising a birthday surprise that she'll never forget. An Italian production shot entirely in Savannah, Georgia, "Madhouse" (aka "And When She Was Bad" and "There Was a Little Girl") fuses slasher elements with the over-the-top excess of '80s Italian terror -- resulting in a cinematic bloodbath so gut-wrenching that the British authorities saw fit to outlaw it as a "video nasty." They Live By Night (1948) Legendary director Nicholas Ray began his career with this lyrical film noir, the first in a series of existential genre films overflowing with sympathy for America’s outcasts and underdogs. The young lovers envision a new, decent life together, but as they flee the cops and contend with Bowie’s fellow outlaws, who aren’t about to let him go straight, they realize there’s nowhere left to run.
