photo for The Leech

The Leech

(2022) From "Black Christmas" to "Rare Exports," there has long been a symbiotic relationship between horror and the season of good cheer. Now, writer-director Eric Pennycoff ("Sadistic Intentions") continues this proud tradition with "The Leech," a cautionary tale about the perils of opening your door to a stranger. Father David (Graham Skipper), a Catholic priest struggling to fill the pews in his church, allows a homeless man, Terry (Jeremy Gardner), into his home to escape the December chill. But this simple act of kindness has unforeseen consequences when Terry's pregnant girlfriend, Lexi (Taylor Gardner), also decides to crash at the parochial house. Determined to save the warring couple through the healing power of God's love, David's ordered existence quickly unravels as he succumbs to the wicked ways of the parasitic pair. Will he pass this apparent test of faith or resort to blood-soaked, Old Testament justice? Agonizingly intense and rib-ticklingly funny in equal measure, "The Leech" serves as both a festive frightmare and a microcosm of the fault lines of contemporary America. Formats: Blu-ray. Michael Haneke: Trilogy

With his first three theatrical features, "The Seventh Continent" (1989), "Benny’s Video" (1992), and "71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance" (1994) — a trilogy depicting a coldly bureaucratic society in which genuine human relationships have been supplanted by a deep-photo for Michael Haneke: Trilogyseated collective malaise - Haneke established the rigorous visual style and unsettling themes that would recur throughout his work. Exploring the relationships among consumerism, violence, mass media, and contemporary alienation, these brilliant, relentlessly probing films open up profound questions about the world in which we live while refusing the false comfort of easy answers. Shawscope Volume 2 [Limited Edition Boxset]

Picking up where Volume One left off, this 10-disc sophomore collection of Hong Kong cinema classics draws together many of the best films from the final years of the Shaw Brothers studio, proving that while the end was nigh, these merchants of martial arts mayhem weren't going to go out without a fight. Armed with stunning special features and ravishing new restorations, this boxset is even bigger and bolder than the last one. The set opens with kung fu master Lau Kar-leung's classic "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin," in which Gordon Liu achieved overnight stardom as the young man who finds enlightenment on the path to vengeance; Lau and Liu followed the original with two inventive sequels, "Return to the 36th Chamber" and "Disciples of the 36th Chamber," both included here. A genius at blending dazzling action with physical comedy, Lau plays the lead role in the hilarious "Mad Monkey Kung Fu," coupled here with Lo Mar's "Five Superfighters." Next, we once again meet Chang Cheh's basher boy band the Venom Mob in four of their best-loved team-ups: "Invincible Shaolin," "The Kid with the Golden Arm," "Magnificent Ruffian"s and the all-star "Ten Tigers of Kwangtung," co-starring Ti Lung and Fu Sheng. After Lau brings us perhaps his best high-kicking comedy with "My Young Auntie," a playful star vehicle for his real-life muse Kara Hui, we see Shaw Brothers embracing 80s excess in the strangest double feature yet: Wong Jing's breathtakingly wild shoot-'em up "Mercenaries from Hong Kong," and Kuei Chih-hung's spectacularly unhinged black magic meltdown "The Boxer's Omen." Last but certainly not least, Lau Kar-leung directs the last major Shaw production, "Martial Arts of Shaolin," filmed in mainland China with a hot new talent named Jet Li in the lead role; it is paired in this set with "The Bare-footed Kid," a reverent remake of a Chang Cheh classic with Johnnie To in the director's chair and Lau back on choreography duties, in arguably the ultimate filmed tribute to Shaws' everlasting cinematic legacy. Formats: Blu-ray Extras: High Definition (1080p) Blu-ray presentations of all fourteen films, including nine new 2K restorations by Arrow Films; illustrated 60-page collectors’ book featuring new writing by David Desser, Jonathan Clements, Lovely Jon and David West, plus cast and crew listings and notes on each film by Simon Abrams; new artwork; hours of never-before-seen bonus features including several cast and crew interviews from the Frédéric Ambroisine Video Archive; includes two CDs of music from the De Wolfe Music library as heard in several of the films, exclusive to this collection. The Last Bookshop of the World

(2017 -- Finland) Four Europeans from different cultures and fields of art set off in a minibus with a quality trove of world literature. They go in search, across a vast desert-like landscape, to find a place as remote as possible where they will establish the world's last bookshop. An isolated location is just perfect for their purpose, as there, the printed books of the world will be much safer from big city termites and the ups and downs of the internet. During the journey, the four discuss the unique gift of reading and also certain works of world literature that have changed each of them in a decisive way. They also ponder why Westerners are consuming more and more violent literature and at the same time harboring fears of increasing physical violence in all countries. Bringing the almost-lost purpose of books to the fore, this creative documentary poses important questions not yet discussed in film about whether we're reading what's worthwhile and if the timeless qualities once praised in literature have been replaced by sheer entertainment. What does this mean to our inner lives and to civilization? In Spanish, French, German, and Finnish with English subtitles. Formats: DVD, Digital. (IndiePix Films).

Riotsville, U.S.A.

(2022) Welcome to Riotsville, U.S.A. – a point in American history when the nation’s rulers – politicians, bureaucrats, police – were faced with the mounting militancy of the late-1960s, and did everything possible to win the war in the streets. Using training footage of Army-built model towns called “Riotsvilles” where military and police were trained to respond to civil disorder, in addition to nationally broadcast news media, director Sierra Pettengill connects the stagecraft of “law and order” to the real violence of state practice. Recovering an obscured history whose effects have shaped the present in ways both insidious and explosive, the film is a poetic and furious reflection on the rebellions of the 1960s – and the machine that worked to destroy them. Silent Running (UHD)

(1972) In 1968, visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull ("The Andromeda Strain," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind") contributed to the ground-breaking special photographic effects of Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey." When the crews are ordered to destroy the remaining specimens, one botanist, Freeman Lowell (Bruce Dern), rebels and flees towards Saturn in a desperate bid to preserve his own little piece of Earth that was, accompanied only by the ship's three service robots. photo for Three Films By Mai Zetterling

Three Films By Mai Zetterling

A fearlessly transgressive, long-overlooked pioneer of feminist cinema, Swedish actor turned director Mai Zetterling ruffled the feathers of the patriarchal establishment with a string of bracingly modern, sexually frank, and politically incendiary films focused on female agency and the turbulent state of 20th-century Europe. Her peerless ability to render subjective psychological states with startling immediacy is on display in "Loving Couples" (1964), "Night Games" (1966), and "The Girls" (1968) — three provocative, taboo-shattering works from the 1960s featuring some of Swedish cinema’s most iconic stars. With their audacious narrative structures that fuse reality and fantasy, their elaborate use of metaphor and symbolism, and their willingness to delve into the most fraught realms of human experience, these movies are models of adventurous, passionately engaged filmmaking. The Velvet Underground

(2021) Emerging from the primordial soup of glamour, gutter sleaze, and feverish creativity that was New York’s 1960s underground culture, the Velvet Underground redefined music with its at once raw and exalted blend of experimentation and art-damaged rock and roll. In his kaleidoscopic documentary "The Velvet Underground," Todd Haynes vividly evokes the band’s incandescent world: the creative origins of the twin visionaries Lou Reed and John Cale, Andy Warhol’s fabled Factory, and the explosive tension between pop and the avant-garde that propelled the group and ultimately consumed it. Never-before-seen performances, interviews, rare recordings, and mind-blowing transmissions from the era’s avant-garde cinema scene come together in an ecstatic swirl of sound and image that is to the traditional music documentary what the Velvets were to rock: utterly revolutionary. Formats: DVD, Blu-ray, with new 4K digital master, approved by director Todd Haynes and cinematographer Ed Lachman, with Dolby Atmos soundtrack on the Blu-ray. Extras: Read more here. The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales

The story begins in 2018, after Abigail encounters workers at the company that bears her name struggling to put food on the table. Could she, a descendent, with no role in the multinational conglomerate, use her famous last name to help pressure Disney and other American corporations to treat low-wage workers more humanely? Believing her conservative grandfather, Roy Disney, (Walt’s brother and company co-founder) would never have tolerated employee hunger at “The Happiest Place On Earth,” Abigail reexamines the story of modern American capitalism from the middle of the last century, when wealth was shared more equitably, to today, when CEO’s earn upwards of 800 times more than their average employees. What happened? What Abigail learns -- about racism, corporate power, and the American Dream, is eye-opening, unexpected, and inspiring in that it begins to imagine a path to a fairer future for everyone.
