photo for His Girl Friday

His Girl Friday

(1940) One of the fastest, funniest, and most quotable films ever made, "His Girl Friday" stars Rosalind Russell as reporter Hildy Johnson, a standout among cinema's powerful women. Hildy is matched in force only by her conniving but charismatic editor and ex-husband, Walter Burns (played by the peerless Cary Grant), who dangles the chance for her to scoop her fellow newswriters with the story of an impending execution in order to keep her from hopping the train that's supposed to take her to Albany and a new life as a housewife. When adapting Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur's smash hit play "The Front Page," director Howard Hawks had the inspired idea of turning star reporter Hildy Johnson into a woman, and the result is an immortal mix of hard-boiled newsroom setting with remarriage comedy. Also presented here is a brand-new restoration of the 1931" The Front Page," the famous pre-Code adaptation of the same material, directed by Lewis Milestone. Something Wild

(1961) A complex exploration of the physical and emotional effects of trauma, "Something Wild" stars Carroll Baker, in a layered performance, as a college student who attempts suicide after a brutal sexual assault but is stopped by a mechanic played by Ralph Meeker -- whose kindness, however, soon takes an unsettling turn. Startlingly modern in its frankness and psychological realism, the film represents one of the purest on-screen expressions of the sensibility of the intimate community of artists around New York's Actors Studio, which transformed American cinema in the mid-20th century. With astonishing location and claustrophobic interior photography by Eugene Schüfftan, an opening-title sequence by the inimitable Saul Bass, and a rhythmic score by Aaron Copland, this film by Jack Garfein is a masterwork of independent cinema. New, restored 2K digital transfer, supervised by director Jack Garfein, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray. Formats: DVD, Blu-ray Disc. Extras: New conversation between Garfein and critic Kim Morgan; new interview with Baker; new interview with scholar Foster Hirsch on the Actors Studio's cinematic legacy; "Master Class With Jack Garfein," a 2015 recording of one of the director's world-famous lectures on acting technique; an essay by critic Sheila O'Malley. Train to Busan

(2016 -- South Korea) Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi, Ma Dong-seok, Choi Woo-sik, An So-hee. Zombie horror-thriller that follows a group of terrified passengers fighting their way through a countrywide zombie viral outbreak, trapped on a suspicion-filled, blood-drenched bullet train ride to the Safe Zone ... which may or may not still be there. A businessman and his estranged daughter hop a train to Busan, unawares that a research plant -- funded by the businessman's financial firm -- has unleashed a virus that is quickly turning South Korea into a land of zombies. When the infection spreads to the speeding train, a group of passengers -- lead by the businessman and a blue-collar worker -- must fight their way through the zombie hordes to the safety of the front cars of the train -- all the while hoping that Busan has been safely cordoned off from the infected countryside. It's a thrilling, entertaining take on the zombie genre, with fleshed out characters, social commentary, and terrific action sequences. Forget all you knew about slow-moving zombies -- these flesh eaters, like the ones in "World War Z," are pretty darn fast and hard to stop. Biggest grossing South Korean film of all time. photo for Black Girl

Black Girl

(1966) Ousmane Sembène ("Xala," "Faat Kiné") was one of the greatest and most groundbreaking filmmakers who ever lived, as well as the most internationally renowned African director of the 20 century -- but his name deserves to be better known in the rest of the world. He made his feature debut in 1966 with the brilliant and stirring "Black Girl." Sembène, who was also an acclaimed novelist in his native Senegal, transforms a deceptively simple plot -- about a young Senegalese woman who moves to France to work for a wealthy white couple and finds that life in their small apartment becomes a prison, both figuratively and literally -- into a complexly layered critique of the lingering colonialist mind-set of a supposedly postcolonial world. Featuring a moving central performance by M'Bissine Thérèse Diop, "Black Girl" is a harrowing human drama as well as a radical political statement -- and one of the essential films of the 1960s. New 4K digital restoration, undertaken by The Film Foundation's World Cinema Project in collaboration with the Cineteca di Bologna, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray. Takashi Miike's Black Society Trilogy

After several years spent working almost exclusively in the direct-to-video world of "V-cinema" in Japan, Takashi Miike announced himself as a world-class filmmaking talent with this trio of thematically-connected, character-centric crime stories about violence, the underworld of Japanese society, families both real and surrogate, and the possibly hopeless task of finding one's place in the world. His first films made specifically for theatrical release, and his first for a major studio, the "Black Society Trilogy" was the beginning of Miike's mature career as a filmmaker and they remain among the prolific director's finest works. Set in the bustling Kabuki-cho nightlife neighborhood of Tokyo, "Shinjuku Triad Society" follows a mixed-race cop (Kippei Shiina) struggling with private issues while hunting a psychotic criminal (Tomorowo Taguchi) who traffics in children's organs. "Rainy Dog," shot entirely in Taiwan, is about an exiled yakuza (Show Aikawa) who finds himself saddled with a son he never knew he had and a price on his head after the Chinese gang he works for decides to turn on him. "Ley Lines" moves from the countryside to the city and back, as three Japanese youths of Chinese descent (including Kazuki Kitamura) seek their fortune in Tokyo, only to run afoul of a violent gang boss (Naoto Takenaka). High Definition digital transfers of all three films with original uncompressed stereo audio. Formats: Blu-ray, DVD.
